Whole genome sequencing vs. a sampling strategy

Sequencing an entire genome is still a costly undertaking. Often researchers are more interested in the genes than in the whole genome sequence.

In the next section we will learn about sampling strategies and methods of gene discovery which do not require sequencing the whole genome. In deciding whether to sequence the whole genome or just "sample" it, scientists must balance the saving in cost with the loss of some information.
