The Human Genome Project
The first large-scale sequencing project was the Human Genome Project
(HGP), started by the US Department of Energy and involving
contributions from the US, China, France, Germany, Japan and the United
Kingdom.
The genome was actually sequenced twice by two different
groups (the publicly funded group headed first by Jim Watson and later
by Francis Collins, and Craig Venter's company Celera) and the
completion announced simultaneously.
