 In the pre-genomics era, each scientist typically worked on a particular plant species or even on one particular gene. Now that the extent to which plants and gene functions are conserved is understood, a scientist can exploit (and needs to be aware of!) information derived from other organisms. This means that one has to keep up with a large amount of ongoing research, however....
