The tools of molecular biology

The whole genome of an organism can be up to billions of base pairs long, and so is difficult to work with

 

 

Breaking the genome up into smaller fragments, each between 200-2000bp in size, can be done in a number of ways

 

 

 

 

 

 

Smaller pieces are clonable (inserted into a plasmid, and propagated in a bacterial cell)‏

 

 

 

 

 

 

Next came the technologies to manipulate and study DNA, for example, DNA cloning.
