The tools of molecular biology
The whole genome of an organism can be up to billions of base pairs long, and so is difficult to work with
Breaking the genome up into smaller fragments, each between 200-2000bp in size, can be done in a number of ways
Smaller pieces are clonable (inserted into a plasmid, and propagated in a bacterial cell)
Next came the technologies to manipulate and study DNA, for example, DNA cloning. |
