Purpose of databases

The purpose of a database may be simply to store data, but they can be used to distribute, publicize or make the data available to a larger user group.

Genomic databases usually include software tools for searching and comparing the sequence data, and often statistical tools for analysis. This is a screenshot of some of the tools offered by the MIPS database (Munich Information Center for Protein Sequences http://mips.gsf.de/ ).
