Macrosynteny vs. microsynteny

  In the organisms on the left, not only are the genes A, B, and C syntenic, but all the genes in between are too.

In the organisms on the right, although A, B, and C appear syntenic, other genes in between are not.


 
A frequent observation is that, despite evidence for macrosynteny, gene content/order is not so well conserved at the micro level.
