Key background concept: genome structure

Much of the genome sequence does not encode genes. Coding sequences (called exons) are often interrupted by stretches of non-coding DNA called introns. Only the exons remain in the mRNA.

So, with respect to the DNA sequence, it is important to remember that not the entire sequence is actually genic. This has a lot of relevance to comparing sequences, finding genes, and other tools and methods of genomics.
