Note on terminology
In Marker-Assisted Breeding, the terms marker, locus and gene are often (and wrongly!) used interchangeably. The locus (plural: loci) defines a particular chromosome segment, whether or not this contains a gene. A marker is used to identify or track a locus. Locus and gene are only synonymous if the locus is made up of only the sequence of the gene.
