Linkage

If 2 genes or DNA segments are located near each other on the same chromosome, they are often inherited together, not independently. This is called linkage. 

In the previous pea example, if the 2 genes (colour and shape) were linked, the segregation ratios would depart from 9:3:3:1, i.e. the genes would not show independent assortment.
