Predicting gene function

Predicting and confirming gene function can be difficult. Putative (possible) function can sometimes be inferred by searching for similar genes (assuming that genes with a similar sequence will have a similar function).

As of 2003, the function of most of the genes in these four organisms was still unknown, and many have only been characterized by similarity. In the end, all functions need to be confirmed experimentally.
