Importance of diversity for molecular marker work

In addition to the importance of genetic diversity to crop improvement in general, it is very important to the use of molecular markers - we need to see differences between alleles to be able to map genes or do any studies involving markers.

This diagram shows the marker profile of 5 plant lines. It is only because there is some difference – polymorphism – between the lines which makes any analysis based on markers possible (mapping, diversity studies, etc.). The differences in  band mobility through the gels reflects differences in the DNA sequence of the amplicons produced from the five templates.
