Despite these issues, wide crossing has been used with considerable success in some crops.
Some examples:
- Blight resistance in potato
- Rust resistance in wheat
- Insect resistance in rice
Wide crosses have been made between wild tomatoes (left) and cultivated tomatoes (right), resulting in increased fruit size, higher sugars, and redder color in the cultivated variety.
