Phenotyping technologies: aerial photography
Aerial photography
- Has been used to manage forests and other land uses for decades.
- Can use satellite (High altitude)
- Or remote aircraft, plane and hot air balloons (low altitude)
- Unique issues involved in processing images including: Earth's curvature, terrain, solar penetration (shadows), unevenly coloured background, etc.
Some traits that can be measured from aerial photographs include: Height, width, area, perimeter, mean grayness (colour density), mode grayness, and four measures of shape descriptions. (example next page)
