IBP meets partners for Genomes2Fields Initiative

November 14, 2014

On 10-12 November 2014, a group of collaborators from Iowa State University, CIMMYT, iPlant Collaborative and Leafnode LLC gathered to create a shared understanding of the capabilities of the Breeding Management System within the Genomes2Fields initiative.

The Genomes2Fields initiative strives to bring together genotypic, phenotypic and environmental information to offer plant breeders increased efficiency and accuracy in the selection of maize during the breeding process.

From left to right, back: Clarissa Pimentel (IBP), Rebecca Berrigan (Leafnode),
Kate Dreher (CIMMYT), Ramona Walls (iPlant), Julian Pietragalla (IBP),
Darwin Campbell (ISU), Jan Erik Backlund (IBP). Front: Jack Gardiner (ISU) and
Carolyn Lawrence (ISU).

The meeting was highly successful, fostering a great spirit of collaboration via the following activities :

  • Review of the Genomes2Fields objectives;
  • Review Seeds of Discovery CIMMYT initiative and tour the Genebank;
  • Review iPlant infrastructure and support systems for large dataset management;
  • Preliminary concepts of data sharing between genotype, phenotype and environmental systems;
  • Review the BMS, focusing on phenotypic data import and management;
  • Load preliminary Iowa State University trial data into the BMS for assessment.

The Integrated Breeding Platform (IBP) Team will continue to collaborate with these partners in view of enhancing BMS capabilities in phenotypic data import and reporting, using datasets from Iowa State University, with support from the iPlant Collaborative team and infrastructure.

Thank you to CIMMYT for excellent facilities and hospitality !
