Systems biology course: Statistical analysis of ~omics data

November 26, 2014

Organised by Wageningen UR Plant Breeding, Biometris, the Graduate Schools VLAG and EPS, the "Systems biology course: Statistical analysis of ~omics data" will take place at Wageningen Campus, The Netherlands, on 15-19 December 2014.

Deadline for registration is 3 December 2014. Click here for the complete programme topics and registration.

Course design

In order to successfully interpret experimental results generated by high-throughput ~omics methods the course will cover the principles underlying preprocessing, statistical analysis and visualisation of large datasets derived from transcriptomics and metabolomics experiments. The emphasis will be on statistical aspects and analysis. Relevant software will be mentioned and some will be used during hands-on exercises. This is an advanced level statistical course on statistical analyses, where transcriptomics and metabolomics data sets will be used to demonstrate how these methods can be applied.

Target group

This is a course aimed at applied biologists, molecular and cell biologists, geneticists and plant/animal breeding PhDs, and statistics and bioinformatics PhD students who deal with large ~omics (transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics) data sets. Basic knowledge in Cell biology, Molecular biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Statistics and Excel is assumed. Without this knowledge, it is advisable to carry out review and remedial work for these topics regarding transcriptomics, metabolomics and statistics. Some basic programming skills and experience with handling computers and navigating the internet is necessary. Different software packages will be used for different methods (Excel, SPSS, R and Bioconductor, GeneMaths) so some experience in using these packages is convenient. Especially with respect to writing scripts in R, this course will be much more effective if you already have some experience with this freeware statistical package.

In total 40 seats are available. There will be no selection procedure (first-come-first-serve). However, due to the space limitation it is advised to register early.

Course fees

The course fee includes coffee/tea during the breaks, lunches, course material and one course dinner:

  • VLAG/EPS PhD students (with approved TSP) and registered VLAG/EPS postdocs: € 300
  • Other PhD students, postdocs and University staff/Non-profit: € 500
  • All others: € 900

Cancellation is free of charge until November 15th, 2014. After this date the full fee has to be paid (minimum € 500). Substitution may be made until the start of the course.
