Whiteflies in Uganda

Whiteflies are a vector to CMD and suspected to be a vector of CBSD. It has also been reported to have attained a pest status in Uganda and causes an estimated yield loss of more than 40% and best managed through host plant resistance. An initiative to screen for resistance using germ plasm from Latin America in collaboration with International center for tropical Agriculture (CIAT), Cali, Colombia has started. A related study is onging to further understand transmission mechanism of CBSD by whiteflies.
