Senior Scientist/Lead-Forward Breeding at ICRISAT Headquarters

ICRISAT is seeking applications from a dynamic and highly innovative, forward breeding expert to undertake the modernisation of ICRISAT breeding programmes by deploying modern breeding approaches in ICRISAT mandate tropics, as well as by assisting breeding programmes of other key CGIAR centres. The incumbent will be based at ICRISAT Headquarters in Patancheru, Telangana, in India. For more information about ICRISAT, see www.icrisat.org.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Evaluate the utility of modern breeding approaches to enhance the rate of genetic gain
  2. Coordinate deployment of forward breeding across ICRISAT mandate crops, as well as other key CGIAR centres like CIMMYT, IRRI, IITA, CIAT, etc.
  3. Deploy the use of markers for selecting desirable lines in breeding programmes
  4. Optimising and utilising genomic information for breeding
  5. Handling logistics for and actively participating in workshops, meetings
  6. Fund raising through the development of research projects in collaboration, where possible, with partners;
  7. Compiling and analysing results, and writing reports;
  8. Writing research papers, guide students/ research technicians, and participate in organising workshops/ training programmes and capacity?building activities

Personal Profile

Ph.D. in Genetics / Plant Breeding / Biotechnology / Plant Science or related discipline with at least 5 years of research experience in the field of applied genomics and modern breeding for crop improvement.

The candidate should have experience with the use of markers in a crop improvement programme, and should be well informed about recent developments of marker genotyping technologies. The ideal candidate should be well equipped with the forward breeding approaches, latest genotyping technologies, trait mapping, molecular breeding approaches (genomic selection, marker-assisted backcrossing), and computational tools.

Preference will be given to candidates with industry background and working experience with a large number of partners across the world. The job involves working in an inter-disciplinary team, in multicultural and multinational environment, and necesitates the ability to interact with partner organisations. Fluency in English, spoken and written, is essential.

The Reward

This is an internationally recruited staff (IRS) position with an attractive and competitive salary and benefits package payable in US dollars. An attractive compensation will be offered to the right candidate. The position is initially for two years, and extendable depending on performance of the incumbent.
